Viola Applen, 100, sister of Spring Valley woman
Nov 13, 2018Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.She was born on Sept. 5, 1918, to Bert and Gertrude (Kappers) Howard in Brookings, S.D.She graduated from high school in Brookings.She married Donald G. Applen on Dec. 8, 1935, in Grand Meadow.The couple lived in the Spring Valley area until 1948, then they moved to the Chatfield-Eyota area.She worked for Dayton’s as a sales clerk. She enjoyed square dancing and playing cards. She was also a member of Chatfield Lutheran Church.She is survived by her son, Dwayne (Patricia) of Hot Springs, S.D.; two daughters-in-law, Carol Applen of Eyota and Eloise Applen of Rochester; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a sister, Eileen Oeltjen of Spring Valley.She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; two sons, John and Larry; an infant son, Rodney (Stevie); one brother, Bernard, and a sister, Irma.The funeral service for her was held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Chatfield Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Docken officiating.
